234 candidates in Nagaland poll fray

DIMAPUR, Feb 10 ? The pre-election process in Nagaland has reached its last stages with the last date for filing of nomination expiring Friday. The scrutiny, which was done on Saturday, revealed a total of 234 candidates who have filed their nominations for the 10th Nagaland Legislative Assembly Polls scheduled for February 26 next. None of the nominations were either rejected or disqualified.

Going by the filing of nominations, the final showdown would also see two women candidates in the fray. Between the two, Chubala Shilu, wife of first Nagaland chief minister Shilu Ao who has filed her nomination on NPF ticket from 26 Aonglenden A/C against incumbent chief minister SC Jamir will hog the limelight. The other woman is Akheli, an Independent candidate from Ghaspani-II A/C.

The ruling Congress has fielded candidates in all 60 seats while NPF in 53, BJP in 35, JD(U) in 14, NCP in 7, Samata Party in 4, RLD in 4, Trinamool Congress in 2 and NDM in 25 seats. The total figure of 234 also includes 30 independent candidates. The last date of withdrawal of nominations is slated for Monday.
