4 ULFA cadres, 2 Armymen among 8 killed

GUWAHATI, June 19 ? Altogether eight persons including four ULFA militants and two Armymen were killed in three separate incidents of violence in the state during the last 24 hours. According to Our Staff Correspondent in Dibrugarh, two ULFA militants and a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Army were killed in a fierce encounter at Bombay Line of Achabam Tea Estate near Namrup in the district last night. One of the killed militants was identified as Prafulla Bora of Joypur near Naharkatiya while the other was identified as Dhruba Kumar Roy alias Apurba Medhi from Bongaigaon. The slain Army JCO was identified as Subedar Furam Singh. The Army recovered an AK-56 rifle and a German Mauser pistol from the encounter site alongwith three magazines and a large quantity of live ammunition.

On receipt of a specific information that some militants were hiding in the house of one Rubul Phukon, the Army gheraoed the house before breaking into it through the back door at around 9-30 PM. In the ensuing gun battle two ULFA militants were killed alongwith the Army JCO. Subedar Singh?s body was flown out to Amritsar today for the last rites with military honours. Meanwhile, in another encounter that took place in Dumni Tea Estate in Nalbari district yesterday two ULFA militants and an Army jawan were killed, according to information provided by Our Nalbari Correspondent.

One of the slain militants was identified as Biru Orang of Subasiri village. The killed Army jawan was identified as Rajendra Kumar of 24 Punjab Regiment. The Army recovered one AK-56 rifle, two AK-56 magazines, 113 rounds of live ammunition from the possession of the slain militant. According to police sources, the Army acting on a tip-off cordoned off the No-6 Line of the Tea Estate where a group of ULFA militants were hiding. On seeing the security personnel the militants opened fire at them killing an Army jawan. Two militants were killed in retaliation from the Army.

In two other incidents NDFB militants shot dead two persons and injured one in separate incidents near Indo-Bhutan border under Runikhata police station and Bengtol police outpost in Kokrajhar district, as per the input provided by Our Kokrajhar Correspondent. Sources informed that a group of heavily armed NDFB militants stormed into the house of one Dinesh Basumatary near Indo-Bhutan border under Runikhata police station and fired upon him injuring him seriously. One youth Brajen Narzary (19) was also killed in the militants? firing. In another incident under Bengtol police station, NDFB ultras killed one Niren Basumatary (25) in his residence at around 9-30 pm, police sources informed.
