Al-Qaeda training NE militants

TEZPUR, March 13— The North-East based militants including ULFA who are presently based in Bangladesh are being trained by the al-Qaeda militants with the help of Pakistan based Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) at Bangladesh and Pakistan said Lt General Mohinder Singh, General Officer Commanding 4 Corps and the operational head of the United Command Structure.

Talking to media persons here Lt General Singh said till date Bangladesh has been providing a safe haven for the North-East based militants. The GOC said although Bangladesh has been denying the allegation but intelligence reports indicate that there are still 90 militant camps operating from the Bangladesh soil with the help of the ISI.

The Lt General said the illegal migration from Bangladesh into North-East will be a major problem in the days to come and looking at the gravity of the situation the Government of India have been raising the issue with the Bangladesh Government at the External Ministry level.

Regarding the recent mortar attack by the ULFA militants at the State capital including at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati, the Lt General said that the 60 mm Chinese mortars which can strike at a distance of 400 metres to 1.5 kms might have been provided by the ISI to ULFA and added that based on the intelligence report the mortars have been shifted from Guwahati to the districts of West Garo Hills in Meghalaya.

Commenting on the Operation Samsheer launched in Meghalaya with the help of police, the GOC said the operation was a partial success for the security forces. Although no militants have been apprehended by the security forces but large quantities of arms and ammunitions and rations were seized by the security forces.
