Shillong, June 9: Rescued from a brothel in Mumbai 18 months ago, 16-year-old Beena (name changed) is anxiously waiting for the day when she will get the chance to interact with resource persons from the US state department and women and children?s organisations.
Her opportunity will come on June 13. A direct video conferencing (DVC) on trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of women and children will be held in the city to discuss cases similar to Beena?s.
Beena, who was rescued along with three others, has been rehabilitated by the Meghalaya chapter of the NGO Impulse, which trained her for programmes dealing with trafficking and sexual exploitation.
?I feel good that there are such programmes to rehabilitate people who have gone through hell,? said Beena, who is longing to talk about how children and young girls are kidnapped and tricked by an organised group of people, who hire local recruiters for the job. However, she knows that the law of may not allow her to reveal all.
The conferencing is part of a daylong programme organised to provide interaction between women and children who have been exploited and resources persons from the National Human Rights Commission, government agencies and Save the Children, India.
Resource persons, officials, university professors and mediapersons based in the US will interact with their Indian counterparts through the DVC. Impulse will host the show in the city.
