Shillong, July 2: The banned A?chik National Volunteers? Council (ANVC) has released South Garo Hills divisional forest officer D. Satyan after holding him in captivity for 13 days. Satyan was released late last night. He was abducted by ANVC militants on June 18 from Baghmara, the district headquarters of South Garo Hills. The banned outfit had demanded Rs 15 lakh as ransom.
Meghalaya director-general of police L. Salio told mediapersons that Satyan was released by the outfit near Baghmara late last night.
He was reportedly freed only after some money was paid by Satyan?s family members.
Satyan?s abduction came at a time when the Centre has evinced interest in holding peace talks with top leaders of the outfit.
The state government has appointed the Garo Baptist Church as official facilitators for initiating peace talks with members of the outfit.
