Army assures Ibobi of full cooperation during probe

IMPHAL, July 18 ? Security officials met the Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and senior state government officials on Friday to discuss the prevailing security scenario in the state, particularly the situation arising out of the alleged killing of Th Manorama Devi by Army personnel on July 11 last, acording to a PIB (Defence Wing) press release.

Following a full appraisal of the situation, Lt Gen Daljeet Singh, VSM, General Officer Commanding, 3 Corps, along with Major General R Singh, GOC 57 Mountain Division, assured the Chief Minister that full cooperation will be extended to the judicial inquiry ordered by the State Government into the incident. Further, the Court of Inquiry set up by the Assam Rifles will be expeditiously completed and appropriate follow-up action will be taken on the basis of the findings.

In the interim period, the concerned Armymen have been taken off their appointments. Once the findings are finalised strictest disciplinary action will be taken against those found guilty and the public will be kept fully informed, the Corps Commander said. Lt Gen Daljeet Singh also asserted that the exercise of powers by the armed forces under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958 will be in strict accordance with the prescribed procedure, parameters and the laws of the land, stated the release.

The Corps Commander maintained that the Army personnel are deployed to assist the State law and order machinery in maintaining peace and tranquility for the benefit of the people and are under strict instruction to discharge their duties and responsibilities with due diligence and responsiveness to public sensitivity. Lt Gen Singh also sought to assure the people of Manipur that justice will be ensured in this regard, the release added.
