Assam Flying Club revived

GUWAHATI, June 17 ? With the launch of air services in the North-East region the need of the hour is to train up more and more youths of the region in aviation training purposes to meet the increasing demand for commercial pilots, said Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi on the occasion of revival of the Assam Flying Club Ltd (AFCL) at LGB International Airport today.

Expressing happiness over the revival of the AFCL after a long gap of nearly a decade, Gogoi said it would go a long way in providing regular flying training courses for the youth of the region which was a long felt requirement of this region for its development. Speaking on the occasion, Capt. Robin Bordoloi, Sports and Youth Welfare Minister, said the revival of the AFCL is a red letter day as it would open up employment avenues for the unemployed youths of the region. Capt. Bordoloi stressed on making the AFCL a self-sustaining one. ?If 20-25 youths of the region come forward for training the AFCL will become economically viable,? he added. Social Welfare Minister, Gautam Roy, who was the sports minister before the recent expansion, said the revival of the flying club is an indicator of the Government?s deep commitment to development of sports in the State.

Director, sports and youth welfare, Nityananda Barkataky said as part of its ambitious plans a three-storied building with accommodation and other facilities will come up soon. Barkatoky was optimistic of AFCL becoming a full-fledged academy with the support and cooperation of chief ministers of the region. Veteran, sportsman and organiser Pulin Das, who was also present, remembered his days with the flying club.
