DHAKA, April 2 – Bangladesh has virtually ruled out the possibility of extradition of jailed ULFA leader Anup Chetia saying the government cannot intervene in judicial matters, reports PTI. Foreign Minister Mohammed Morshed Khan told reporters here on Wednesday that "the government can't intervene in the matter as the case pertaining to Chetia is in the court." An NGO run by Sigma Huda, wife of Bangladesh's powerful Communication Minister Nazmul Huda, has moved the court pleading against Chetia's extradition and seeking political asylum for him in Bangladesh. The government is yet to take a decision on the matter.
Asked about the possibility of signing an extradition treaty with India, Khan said the issue was not discussed at all with Indian Foreign Secretary Shashank during his recent visit to Dhaka and "any such initiative is beyond my knowledge." About alleged anti-Bangladesh activities in India, the minister said a list of elements engaged in such activities and their addresses have been submitted to India and hoped that New Delhi will hand them over to Dhaka.
Referring to Shashank's visit, Khan said there was a general discussion on terrorism and reiterated that Bangladesh would not allow its territory to be used by terrorists against India.
