Bhubaneswar appointed APCC chief

NEW DELHI, July 22 ? Former State Industries Minister, Bhubaneswar Kalita was today appointed president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), it was formally announced by the AICC here today. Sri Kalita?s appointment came after Paban Singh Ghatowar submitted his resignation following his defeat in the recent Lok Sabha polls. It was accepted early this week and AICC president, Sonia Gandhi cleared Sri Kalita?s appointment yesterday, sources said.

Appointment of a new president of Assam Congress also going to lead to re-constitution of the APCC, senior Congress leader here said. A clear indication that a new PCC chief is being appointed shortly came from Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Digvijay Singh who is in-charge for Assam, when he told newsmen that Sri Ghatowar?s resignation has been accepted and a new person is being appointed shortly.

Party insider said that Sri Ghatowar?s growing rift with Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi led to his quitting from the post of Party president in the State. He is tipped to be made in-charge of the AICC?s Labour Department, sources said. It was on the eve of the downsizing of the State Government that Sri Ghatowar met AICC president, Sonia Gandhi and other AICC leaders and expressed his desire to quit from his post.
