GUWAHATI, July 13 ? While a major part of the State continues to reel under flood, the Brahmaputra, which has been in spate for the past few days, has posed a serious threat to the city itself. The Brahmaputra was today flowing menacingly at 1.59 metres above the danger level. The trend, however, remained steady throughout the day. Meanwhile, the river was recorded by the Central Water Commission (CWC) as flowing at 51.27 metres at 5 pm today, which is the second highest since 1988 when it had touched 51.37 metres and inundated the Fancy Bazar and Bharalu areas. Yesterday it was recorded at 51.01 metres.
Residents of Fancy Bazar and Bharalu areas were an apprehensive lot today as the Brahmaputra touched the footpaths at many points along the main road and it seemed that another burst of shower would effectively lead to inundation of the area. The situation at Uzanbazar and Chandrapur areas was even worse since yesterday with floodwater of the Brahmaputra submerging parts of the two localities. Chandrapur remained cut off with the rest of the city since yesterday following inundation of the road by the Brahmaputra. There was panic also at Kumarpara after water entered many houses. But thankfully, the city did not experience any rain today.
The GMC Mayor, Kushal Sharma today said that the GMC, the district administration and the Flood Control Department were working in close coordination to mitigate the flood threat and meet any exigencies. Several water pumps have been used to pump out the excess water.
