Centre to handover NH-52 to BRO

KUMARIKATA (Nalbari), Feb 21 — Worried over dilapidated condition of roads in the State, the Centre has decided to handover the National Highway (NH) 52 to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Addressing a press conference here today the Director General of the BRO, Lt Gen Prakash Suri said that the BRO has got a proposal on NH 52 and it is waiting for ‘go ahead signal’ from the authorities concerned. The BRO has been carrying out several projects in Nalbari, Kamrup and Barpeta districts under Prime Minister Special Package scheme. In this context, Lt Gen Suri said that the BRO has been entrusted with the responsibility of improvement of 22 roads under proposed Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) and these would completed on scheduled time.

“Another bypass road of the NH-44 is under progress in Karimganj district which would be completed by next year,” he added. On the State Government’s proposal for erection of fencing along the Indo-Bhutan border, he said complete erection of fencing is not possible due to hostile terrain and river, but we can fence in some parts of the border to prevent movements of militants into the Indian territory.”

Dantak Setu inaugurated: Lt Gen Suri later inaugurated the Dantak Setu (bridge) constructed by the BRO at the cost of Rs 1.63 crore. The bridge on the Kali river was built by the BRO within a span of six months. While inaugurating the bridge, Lt Gen Suri expressed the hope that it would benefit the people of Nalbari district. The bridge is capable of carrying all types of loads and would facilitate trade in the region, he added. The Director General highlighted the long and tremendous record of the BRO in serving the nation in remote and inhospitable areas. He also informed that the BRO has been constructing several roads along the international border to boost economic activities.
