GUWAHATI, Nov 28 ? A group of reserve forest under Dhubri and Haltugaon forest division namely Sarpamari, Srigram Arearjhar, Bagholdoba, Kolobari, Sagalkuti, Nyakgaon and the adjacent wildlife sanctuary Chakrasila (famous four golden langur) together with the international wetland ?Dhirbil? are under continuous pressure of destruction, a press release said.
Earlier these forests were of the category of ?rain forest? and home of various rare flora and fauna. The international wetland ?Dhirbil? is situated in the centre of the reserve forest and wildlife sanctuary. This beel provides all sorts of assistance and water requirement to the animals and birds of these forests. But it is unfortunate that due to the continuous flow of encroachers of unknown identity in this forest area, the forest coverage is severely damaged and they are using these forest land for cultivation and other destructive purposes.
There is a move among the political leaders to provide permanent settlement to the encroachers on the forest land violating all forest rules and regulations and also the Supreme Court order.
The conscious public has also lodged complaint against these continuous and severe deforestation and encroachment to the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India and based on the public complaint, the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India asked to the Secretary, Government of Assam vide letter No. 14/2/2000 FPD for immediate protection and preservation of these reserve forest, wildlife sanctuary and international wetland and the same order was issued to the CCF (territorial) and DFO of Dhubri and Haltugaon division for immediate action.
If the government as well as the concerned department remains indifferents towards these destruction and the public complaints then there will be a great loss of ecology which will affect not only the environmental of Assam but also the world as a whole.
