Imphal, May 5: The superintendent of Chandel district police, T. Samte, who was accused of raping a minor girl who worked at his quarters as domestic help, has been arrested and sent to judicial custody. Sources said the SP was arrested on Sunday from a ward of Imphal’s Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital, where he had been admitted for treatment.
The next day the police produced the officer before the chief judicial magistrate of Chandel, S. Sohadev, who ordered a 15-day judicial remand, till May 17.
The accused had applied for bail but the chief judicial magistrate rejected the plea as he thought there wasn’t sufficient ground for granting bail.
The domestic help, a 14-year old girl, lodged a complaint with the state director general of police, A.K. Parasar, in March, alleging that she was repeatedly raped by the police officer when his wife was away.
Following the complaint, the Chandel police station registered a case against the SP. The case had been handed over to the CID crime branch.
The SP and his wife, however, strongly denied the charges of rape.
The police officer’s wife even claimed that she was present in their quarters on the dates the domestic help alleged that she was raped by her husband taking advantage of her absence.
The SP also accused the family of the victim of trying to extort money from him.
In his order, the chief judicial magistrate ordered the jail authorities to provide necessary treatment and other medical facilities to the officer while he was in custody.
