Cong sweeps Assam civic polls

GUWAHATI, Dec 3 ? The ruling Congress virtually swept the civic polls Assam by capturing power in 34 Municipal bodies out of 55 where elections were held on December 1. The main opposition party Assom Gana Parishad (AGP) managed to win majority in only six civic bodies, while the BJP gained majority in seven. The overall winning percentage of the Congress is 53.32 and that of the AGP is 20.12 and BJP 14.99 in the civic bodies excluding the Guwahati Municipal Corporation.

The election results proved that the Congress managed to retain the hold it had gained in the last assembly polls while, the AGP failed to gain ground , despite change in leadership after the last assembly polls.The BJP also failed to gain much ground in the last two and half years. The performance of the Left parties was very dismal and despite fighting the polls together, the Left?s performance was very poor all over the State. The Congress maintained its hold in the upper Assam districts and managed to gain at some places at the expense of the AGP. The Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said that the people of the urban areas of the State have once again proved their faith in the Congress. This is a victory for secular, democratic and nationalistic ideals, he said. He reiterated the commitment of the State Government for devolution of power to the grassroot level and said that the democratically elected civic bodies would now be able to translate the aspirations of the people into reality.

According to information available with the State Election Commission,in the Silchar MB election, Congress won 22 out of 28 seats, while, the BJP managed to win only three seats and the remaining three seats were won by independents.The Congress made a clean sweep by winning all the 19 seats in the election to the Hojai Municipal Board. In Rangiya Municipal Board, the Congress won six, while, the AGP managed to win two seats, the BJP and one Independent candidate shared one seat each. The Congress and Independents shared two seats each in Sarthebari town committee, while, in Pathsala TC, the Congress bagged two seats and AGP and Independent shared one seat each. The AGP won four of the eight seats of Kharupetia TC, followed by BJP with three seats and Congress one.

The BJP won seven of the 13 seats in Lumding MB and the Congress and independents shared three seats each. But in lanka MB, the Congress won ten of the 11 seats leaving only one seat for the BJP. The AGP won all the ten seats in Dabaka TC while, the Congress won all the four seats in Bokakhat TC. In Nazira MB, the Congress won six of the ten seats, with the AGP managing to win only three, while the independent candidate won only one. The AGP won all the four seats in Bihpuria TC, while, in Karimganj MB the Congress won six seats till the filing of this report with the BJP flowing close behind with five seats. The counting is still on for the rest of the seats. In the Biswanath TC, the AGP won four seats, while, Congress and BJP won two seats each.

Our Correspondents report: Dibrugarh: The Congress swept to power in the Dibrugarh Municipal Board polls by winning 13 seats, while, the AGP and BJP managed to win six and two seats respectively. The Congress won all the eight seats in the Digboi town committee polls, the NCP won all the five seats in the Narioni town committee polls, in Margherita, the Congress won two, while, the AGP and BJP managed to win one seat each. In Jorhat Municipal Board polls, the Congress secured power by winning eleven seats, followed by AGP with six and BJP with two.

In Amguri town committee polls, all the five seats were bagged by Congress and in Chabua the AGP managed to win three out of four seats.

Morigaon: All the eight seats of the Morigaon town committee have been bagged by the Congress.

Badarpur: All the four seats of the Badarpur town committee have been bagged by the BJP. The winning BJP candidates are Chandan Paul, Subimal Bardhan, Ashim Mazumdar and Sephali Mali.

North Guwahati: All the four seats of North Guwahati town committee have been bagged by the Congress.

Nagaon: Congress bagged eleven of the 26 wards in the Nagaon Municipal Board polls, while, the AGP captured eight and BJP managed to win seven wards. The BJP is likely to support the AGP?s bid to capture power in the Municipal Board. In Dhing town committee, the Congress bagged eight seats, while, the AGP managed to win only two.

Nalbari: The ruling Congress managed to get the majority in Nalbari Municipal Board polls by winning seven of the 12 wards, while, the AGP managed to win four and the BJP won one ward.

Sonari: The Congress swept the polls to the Sonari Municipal Board, winning eleven of the 13 wards, while, the BJP managed to win the remaining two seats. The AGP failed to win any seat.

Tezpur: The Congress the AGP went neck to neck in the election to the Tezpur Municipal Board. The AGP bagged nine of the 19 seats, while, the Congress bagged eight and two seats went to independents. The BJP managed to win three of the four seats in the Rangapara town committee and the AGP managed to win only one. Though the Rangapara legislative assembly constituency is considered to be a stronghold of the Congress, the party failed to win any seat. In Dhekiajuli town committee, the AGP managed to win five of the ten seats, while, the Congress won three and two seats went to independents. The Congress won all the six seats in the Gohpur town committee, while the AGP managed to secure majority in Biswanath Chariali town committee by winning four seats, followed by two each by the Congress and the BJP.

Moran: The Congress swept the polls to the Moran town committee, winning four wards, while, the AGP managed to win only one, while the remaining seat went to an independent.

Mangaldoi: The AGP secured majority in the polls to the Mangaldoi Municipal board winning six seats, while, the Congress bagged three and one seat went to Independent candidate.

Goalpara: The Congress bagged seven of the 19 wards in the election to the Goalpara Municipal Board. The AGP managed to win seven seats, while the NCP and BJP won three and one seat respectively. The remaining three seats were own by Independents.

Dhemaji: Congress and AGP managed to win one seat each in the election to Dhemaji town committee polls, while, the remaining two seats were bagged by Independent candidates.

Sivasagar: The Congress captured power in the Sivasagar Municipal Board polls, winning eight of the 14 seats, while, the newly formed Jatiya Aikya Mancha managed to win the remaining six. The AGP and the BJP failed to secure any seat.

Barpeta Road: Both Congress and BJP managed to win four seats each in the election to the Barpeta Road Municipal Board, while, the CPM and Independent candidates won the remaining two seats. The BJP captured three of the four seats in the Sarbhog town committee and the Congress managed to win only one seat, while, in the Howly town committee polls, the Congress captured two seats and AGP and Independent candidates managed to win one seat each.

Golaghat: The Congress won the Dergaon and Golaghat town committee polls.

Dhubri: Upsetting all the calculations, the AGP captured all the four seats in Gauripur town committee polls. In Dhubri Municipal Board polls, the BJP secured seven seats, closely followed by Congress with six.

North Lakhimpur: The Congress secured power in the North Lakhimpur Municipal Board polls by winning eight seats, while, the AGP managed to win four seats.

Mirza: Independent candidates won six seats in the election to the Mirza town committee, while the Congress and AGP managed to win only two seats each.
