Export surplus power only: NE ministers

SHILLONG, May 23?The Power Ministers of the North-eastern States have demanded that no power generated in the region should be exported outside without first meeting the full requirements of the States of the region.

This was clearly spelt out in a resolution adopted by the Power Ministers of the northeastern States, the excess power should be sold at a rate not lower than the rate applicable for the States of the region,? the resolution further asserted.

The Power Ministers also urged the Ministry of Power and the Government of India to expedite the execution of all identified but pending hydropower projects in the North East in accordance with that ?hydroelectricity Initiative? to be launched by the Prime Minister tomorrow.

The meeting chaired by Meghalaya Power Minister and NEREB Chairman R L Tariang was attended by Power Ministers Devanand Konwar (Assam), Kento Ete (Arunachal), Tiameren Ao (Nagaland) and Manik Dey (Tripura).

Reflecting their concern at the higher transmission tariffs in the region compared to other States, the Power Ministers, in another resolution, asked the Union Government ?to adopt a policy decision to put in place and operationalise a pooled uniform transmission for the entire country.
