GUWAHATI, June 24 – The State is experiencing the first wave of flood this year with many of the rivers inundating several areas. Army personnel have been engaged in providing relief to the flood affected people in Goreswar areas of Kamrup district. Floodwaters had reportedly washed away a 7 year-old boy in the Goreswar areas yesterday.
The Brahmaputra was rising throughout its course between Tezpur and Dhubri this afternoon and according to the Central Water Commission (CWC) sources here, this evening, the river would continue to rise between Tezpur and Dhubri during the next 24 hours since 3 pm today. The mighty river was flowing above the danger level (DL) at Dibrugarh (1.31 metres), Neamatighat (0.84 metres), Tezpur (.12 metres) and at Dhubri (0.07 metres) this afternoon. It was flowing above the warning level (WL) in the city (0.62 metres) and at Goalpara (0.43 metres).
The major tributaries of the mighty river, namely, the Jiabharali, Burhidihing, Subansiri and Pagladiya are also rising, said the CWC sources. However, the other two major tributaries of the mighty river, — the Puthimari and the Beki are showing falling trend even as the rivers were flowing above the DL, along with the above four rivers.
Meanwhile, the Katakhal today crossed its previous record of flowing above the DL at Matijuri in Barak valley. This afternoon, it was flowing 2.72 metres above the DL, which is .1 cm above the previous record, the CWC sources said. The other two rivers of the valley, — the Barak and the Kuchiara were also flowing 0.41 metre and 0.84 metre above the DL respectively this afternoon.
According to our Goreswar Correspondent, jawans from the 7 Rajputana Rifles have been providing relief to the people affected by the Puthimari floodwaters in Maregaon village and its adjacent areas under Goreswar Revenue Circle yesterday when the surging water of the river breached about 500 metres of the Maregaon-Sonmahari embankment. About 800 families of these areas were affected by the floodwaters of the river. They have been taking shelter in makeshift shelters.
According to our Patacharkuchi Correspondent, the major rivers of Bajali areas are flowing above the DL. The floodwaters of the Pahumara river have washed away a portion of Gohinpara embankment and inundated several areas and the flood waters of the Tihu river have affected many villages like Rupdiga, Kochdiga, Helona, among others. Road communication between Rampur and Tihu has been affected.
Meanwhile, the floodwaters of Kaldia have overtopped embankments at several places. The surging water of the river has washed away a portion of about ten metres of the embankment near Patacharkuchi. The river is still flowing about 4.6 metres above the DL. According to the official flood bulletin, the Puthimari had breached its embankment at No. 4 Bagta village under Hajo Revenue Circle yesterday. Erosion is posing a threat to the villagers of Malahu and Bhakajari villages in Morigaon district, said the press release.
