Flood situation improves in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, July 27 ? The flood situation in Meghalaya?s Garo Hills region has improved with the rains keeping away during the past three days, reports PTI. Flood water has receded from most of the areas and if the fair weather held people would start going back to their homes from tomorrow, West Garo Hills DC S Jagannathan told PTI from Tura.

A truck-load of relief materials including blankets, plastic sheets and buckets received from the Red Cross were distributed to the worst-affected people of four villages after the headmen identified them. Over one lakh people were affected by the floods in the Garo Hills with a large number of them rendered homeless. Loss of livestock and damage to crops worth crores of rupees were also reported.

Chief Minister DD Lapang made an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas. To a question on Congress president Sonia Gandhi?s reported visit to the flood-affected areas, Jagannathan said he was yet to get any communication about it.
