GUWAHATI, June 30 – The overall flood situation in the State has shown signs of improvement today. The water levels of most of the rivers including the Brahmaputra and its major tributaries have receded. However, the mighty river is still flowing above the danger level (DL) at Dibrugarh (14cm) and Dhubri (13 cm). In the Barak valley, the Kushiara is also flowing .02cm above the DL at Karimganj.
The breaches caused by the floodwaters to the roads in many areas of Rangiya subdivision in Kamrup district, in many places in the districts of Nalbari, Barpeta, Morigaon, Goalpara and Hailakandi are still to be repaired and hence road communication in these areas remains disrupted, said the official flood bulletin here this evening. Erosion by the river Puthimari at Mukaldonga, Hossong, Mahukuchi, Mutkuchi Chuba, Putimari Natun Bazar, Titkuchi, Barlessakona in Kamrup district is continuing. The Barolia is also continuing its erosion at Bathan, while the Nona is continuing its erosion at Halikuchi, Hairandab and Bhatkuchi, said the bulletin.
Meanwhile, the Hailkandi district administration has banned plying of any kind of vehicle on the flood affected NH 154 (Dhaleswar-Bhairabi Road) following the last night’s tragic incident of a passenger bus (AS-24/1068) falling in to floodwaters with 70 passengers in Janakibazar area, about 15 km from Hailakandi, said our Hailakandi Correspondent.
The local people and the police rescued the injured passengers and recovered the body of one person who was killed in the incident. The dead has been identified as Khirode Mohan Das Purkayastha (43) of Lakshminagar area of Hailakandi town. The 35 seriously injured passengers have been admitted to the Hailakandi Civil Hospital. It is also to be mentioned here that ten persons were also injured when a Tata Sumo vehicle fell in the floodwaters in the same area. The injured persons have been admitted to the Silchar Medical College Hospital.
Road communication through the NH-52 has been restored this afternoon with the BRO repairing the damaged portion of the NH in Samarajan area of Dhemaji district and opening the road for light vehicles. The portion of the NH was breached by the floodwaters of the Jiadhal River around 10 am yesterday. It is expected that the road will be open for heavy vehicles within a day or two. The floodwaters of several small streams also overtopped the NH-52 at Lai Mekuli near Jonai in the district yesterday. This disrupted road communication between Jonai and Dhemaji yesterday.
