Gourashyam a bona fide student, says AMSU

IMPHAL, January 24: Reiterating that AMSU is not related to any underground group AMSU Secretary General Y Premananda said Khoirom Gourashyam became presidents of MUSU and AMSU as a bonafide student. Talking to reporters today the secretary general said AMSU is strictly observing its constitutions, which says that it should have no relation with UG groups. AMSU had no relation in past, and no relation now and will not have any relation in future, it said. Reacting to the claim by KYKL (O) Premananda said AMSU refused to accept the claim that the attack on Gourashyam was not against AMSU. He appealed to KYKL (O) not to misunderstood AMSU. Standing that AMSU has taken up several programmes as a part of its campaigns for quality education, he said it encouraged toppers of this years' HSLCE by distributing prizes and it tried to prevent unfair means during this years college examinations with the help of teachers. AMSU is making efforts to ensure that teachers devote to their classes. AMSU is planning to impart free education. AMSU should be supported in its endeavor, he said. Stating that AMSU is a pressure group against human rights violations he said AMSU volunteers went to Tripura to solve the problems of fleeing Meiteis during the clashes between tribals and Bengalis last year. AMSU also defused the tension in Churachandpur following the killing of two Meiteis. On the issue of Sharmila, Premananda said as the issue of territorial integrity of Manipur is hotting up all the members of the AMSU as whole could not take up the issue. But AMSU is the first to sent a memorandum demanding lifting of the Disturbed Area Act. He said preventing prostitutions is also a part of campaign for quality education as it harms the morale of students. With regard to beauty contests its efforts was to hold only one contest so that one qualified contestant at the international level can be selected. Premananda denied forcible collection of money by MASU and said the head office building belongs to students and the public. In this computer era the existing materials are inadequate, he said. He added that the Condemnation Month will continue and black flags will be hoisted. He appealed to all not to harm the students in future.
