GUWAHATI, Jan 24? Following Cabinet approval, the State Government has finalised its new power policy for the power sector. The policy, while recognising the imperative for reform and improving the supply of electricity services to the consumers in the State, provides for consumer orientation, competition in access to electricity, strengthening of the regulatory framework and restructuring of the present institutional structure in the State?s power sector, through functional unbundling of the ASEB into separate entities for generation, transmission and distribution in a phased manner.
An ASEB release said the new power policy recognises the transition required from the current structure to a reformed and competitive framework and seeks to achieve reform with the objective of restoring the financial viability of the power sector so that it ceases to be a financial burden on the State budget and becomes a net generator of resources and be able to attract investment on its own strength.
