GU council okays 12 new degree programmes

GUWAHATI, Aug 23 ? Gauhati University (GU) Academic Council has approved 12 new degree programmes and 32 PG diploma/diploma/certificate courses for the University departments and the colleges affiliated to the University. Besides, the Council has also approved ten career-oriented courses. The decision in these respects was adopted in the Academic Council meeting on June 19 last.

The degree programmes include a five-year LLB course, Bachelor of Computer Application, BSc biotechnology, BSc microbiology, MSc instrumentation, MSc information technology, MD psychiatry, MD/DPM, M Phil clinical psychology, MSc psychiatric nursing, master of tourism management and M Phil psychiatric social work.

The PG diploma/diploma/certificate courses approved by the Academic Council include?PG diploma in Computer Application, two-month certificate course on museum methodology, three-month certificate course on remote sensing and GIS, six-month certificate course on cultivation processing and marketing of medicinal plants, six-month certificate course on technique on mushroom cultivation and utilisation, six-month certificate course on nursery techniques of cultivation and management, six-month certificate course on environment microbiology, three-month certificate course on statistical computing for social scientists,12- month diploma and advance diploma in industry and applied

statistics, industrial mathematics, mathematics of finance and insurance, one-year diploma course in analytical chemistry, six-month certificate course in glass blowing, diploma in defence strategy/policy, diploma in peace and conflict resolution, diploma in human rights, three-month certificate course in spoken English, cultural studies, rhetoric, three-month Montessori methods, two-year part time M Ed, one-year diploma course in business economics and practices, nine-month diploma course in heritage studies of NE India.

The other PG diploma/diploma/certificate courses include?six-month certificate course in crafts of Assam, three-month certificate course in history and culture of NE India, one-year diploma in translation studies, one-year PG diploma in library automation and networking (PGDLAN), diploma in hospital management, diploma in sports medicine, PG diploma in bio-informatics, human rights and humanitarian law, intellectual property rights and diploma in labour law and labour relation.

The career-oriented courses include?computer application, herbal medicine, clinical laboratory technique, child education/early child education and child care, arts and crafts, translation proficiency, tourist guidance, entrepreneurship and small scale development, functional English and creative writing.

The decision of the Academic Council has been hailed by many of the educationists here. But they maintain that the decision was a little late. Had the decision was taken a few years back and implemented in right earnest, a lot of drainage of talents and money could have been saved by the State, they observed.
