Ibobi is the second CM from Thoubal district

Imphal, March 07: O Ibobi who was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Manipur is the second person from Thoubal district to hold the top post after Md Alimuddin. Born to Okram Angoubi and Lukamani Devi on July 19, 1948 at Thoubal Athokpam ward No 7, Ibobi began his political career as an Independent candidate in Khangabok Assembly constituency in 1984-85. After winning the election, he joined Congress and was appointed chairman of the Manipur State Khadi and Village Industries Board till 1988. He was later appointed secretary of the Congress Legislature Party during the tenure of RK Jaychandra Ministry. A graduate in arts, Ibobi was re-elected from the constituency in 1990 general elections on Congress ticket. He was inducted as Minister-in-charge of Municipal Administration, Housing and Urban Development in the Congress Government led by RK Dorendra. He was also Minister-in-charge of Industries in 1994-95 in the Rishang Keishing Ministry. A staunch supporter of the Congress ideology, Ibobi was actively involved in party organizational matters. He was appointed as the vice president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee by AlCCin 1995-96. He retained the post in the Congress organizational polls held in 1997. The new Chief Minister's political career took its wings after he was appointed the president of MPCC(I) on December 10, 1999. He was again re-elected to the post which he holds till now. Ibobi defeated FPM's L Jatra by 2330 votes securing 12897 votes in the recent election.
