Income tax Deptt move to widen base in North East

GUWAHATI, March 12 _ The Income Tax Department has announced the one-by six scheme to widen the tax base in the north-eastern region. This was revealed by Jagrup Singh, Commissioner of Income Tax, decrying a press meet here recently.

Addressing the media, Singh said that the collections of the Department under the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Guwahati, last year were Rs 258 crore, and this year the target has been fixed at Rs 371 crore. The number of assessees in this charge as on January 31, 2003 is 449810. According to one-by-six Scheme, any citizen fulfilling any one of the following six parameters is required to file his return of income in Form-C, even if his income is below the taxable limit of Rs 50000. These parameters are as follows :

Any person who occupied (owned/leased or otherwise) a residential property equal to or exceeding 1100 sq.ft. floor area or a commercial area equal to or exceeding 175 sq.ft. floor area;

Any person who owned a vehicle (other than a two wheeler) — whether under lease or hire purchase or otherwise;

Any person who is a subscriber to a cellular phone;

Any person who has incurred expenditure on foreign travel for self or any other persom;

Any person who is a holder of a credit card, not being an add-on card;

Any person who is a member of a club where entrance fee is Rs 25,000 or more.

Non-compliance of these provisions attracts a penalty of Rs 5000, Singh pointed out.
