Indian, Myanmarese armies discuss border security

IMPHAL, June 21– Even as the army authority deployed in the State has denied to disclose their activities in flushing out of the Manipur-based insurgents along the Indo-Myanmar border, a high-level meeting of Indian and Myanmarese armies was held at Army headquarter at Rangapahar in Dimapur (Nagaland).

According to the reports received here, a 14-member delegation of Myanmar Army led by Lt Gen Ye Myint and their Indian counterparts held a discussion at length the overall security scenario along the international border. Although the meeting was believed to have chalked out strategies to flush out militants from the north-eastern region of the country holed up in the neighbouring country, the Indian Army denied such speculation saying that the meeting was just a routine affair. The source further added that the next round of the meeting between the two sides would be held in December next.

The people of Manipur have been witnessing frequent movements of the Indian troops towards the Indo-Myanmar border using both air and surface transportation since the past few weeks after the occupation of Sajik Tampak. Even the Lt Gen J S Verma, the General Commanding Officer of the Eastern Command, Kolkata also visited the State and held separate meetings with the State Governor Arvind Dave and Chief Minister Okram Ibobi. However what transpired in the meetings, is yet to be established.

Meanwhile, proscribed United National Liberation Front (UNLF) has claimed that its cadres killed ten Indian Army personnel and seriously injured 15 others in a daring attack at the 44 Mountain Brigade post Sallup in Chandel district on Saturday night.
