Indo-Bangla survey to solve erosion menace

AGARTALA, Aug 21 ? India and Bangladesh will carry out a joint survey to prepare modalities for the next Joint River Commission meeting between the two countries to solve the erosion problem, reports PTI. The three day joint survey, to be undertaken at Malaya in Tripura's Dhalai district and Mogabill, in Bangladesh's Moulavibazar from September six at the Superintending Engineer (water resource) level, would prepare modalities for the next joint river panel meeting, official sources said today.

The decision of carrying out a joint survey came after a meeting between the Superintendent Engineer (water resource), Bangladesh and his counterpart in Kamalpur of Dhalai district on Thursday, the sources said. Superintendent Engineer (water resource) P Saha who led the Indian side said the three-day joint survey would be followed by prepartion of a detailed report on erosion caused by river Dhalai along Indo-Bangladesh border. The Joint River Commission would meet later next this month in Maulavibazar of Bangladesh to find an amicable solution to erosion problem.

Saha said river Dhalai had been posing serious threat to the embankment at Malaya adjacent to Kamalpur town of Tripura and the issue figured in the discussion too. He said Thursday's meeting between the two sides was held in a cordial atmosphere. The Bangladesh delegation leader Syed Abir Al Mamod promised to solve any dispute through bilateral discussion, Saha said. Earlier, members of the Joint River Commission team visited some of the affected areas of both sides to take stock of the situation.
