IRB men fire to quell Lilong mob

Imphal, May 26: IRB personnel fired in the air to quell a mob that had built up at Lilong Sambrukhong following alleged reports that police were going to deposit the dead body of Md Alauddin at his Lilong Chandrakhong residence at around 4.30 this evening. Alauddin's body has been lying at the RIMS morgue as his family declined to collect it till today. The body was recovered from Oinam Barrage yesterday morning. Lilong residents put up road blockades at Chandrakhong Makok, Mamei, Mayai Leikai Laishrangkhong and Sambrukhong following rumors that police are going to deposit the body at his residence at around 4.30 this evening. The mob went out of control when they saw a Wangoi police commando party approaching the area. It provoked the IRB personnel manning the area to fire around 20 blank rounds to control the mob. DIG V Zathang also rushed to the area. Meanwhile, police sources said the body will be handed over to Municipal authorities if his family fails to collect it by tomorrow. In another development, family members of Alauddin said today that he was not picked up by AR. Those taken away by AR are Md Amuba and Ithem. They alleged that Alauddin was captured by the occupants of the houses which were burnt yesterday taking advantage of the AR's visit to the area. The AR has also denied picking up Alauddin. AR press spokesman said its personnel apprehended Md Khadir Khan and Md Abdul. Both were handed over to Thoubal police station on May 23 itself.
