Jibantara bags Moran seat

DIBRUGARH, Oct 16 ? Congress candidate Jibantara Ghatowar today had the last laugh when she defeated Paragjyoti Baruah of the AGP by a convincing 8577 vote margin in the Moran by-poll election result, in stark contrast to speculation in the State?s vernacular media that the AGP has the edge.

Ultimately, Assam Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Ripun Bora proved to be prophetic when he told The Assam Tribune earlier this week that the Congress would win by eight to ten thousand votes.

Ghatowar polled 31916 votes, compared to Baruah?s 23339 votes. BJP?s Jadab Dehingia polled 3476 votes while former diplomat and NCP candidate, Binanda Gogoi, got 889 votes. Except for the Congress and the AGP candidates, all have lost their security deposits.

Speaking to the media here immediately after she was declared elected, Jibantara said she will work for the formal notification of the Moran civil subdivision within the Dibrugarh district, as it was an election promise. She also said she will also try to see to it that the dilapidated road condition of the constituency is repaired and made motorable within a short time.

AGP leader Sarbananda Sonowal said his party respects the verdict of the people of Moran, and said that the party will henceforth work for the accelerated development of the constituency to win back the confidence of the people. He alleged that the Congress used unfair means to gain votes.

Meanwhile, the AGP has in a release accepted the verdict of the electorate and congratulated Jibantara Ghatowar on her win.
