Karbi zone tense over UPDS threat

Nagaon, May 6: Assam’s troubled Karbi Anglong district is on the boil again with the pro-talks faction of the United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) threatening an armed operation against the rival Karbi Anglong and N.C. Hills People’s Resistance, which allegedly abducted the siblings of two of its new members.

The publicity secretary of the pro-talks faction, Tong-Eh-Nongloda, today said his organisation had no option but to go after those who abducted the family members of Jeet Ranghang and Jeet Hanse, two militants who defected to his organisation before the election.

He said Ranghang’s brother Jiten was abducted from Chakihola block, while Hanche’s sibling Ren was whisked away from Dholajan.

The militant leader described the practice of targeting family members of rival militants as a “shameful” one. “Such acts of vengeance do not behove a militant group,” he said.

The UPDS publicity secretary asked the Karbi Anglong and N.C. Hills People’s Resistance to release the abducted persons immediately, failing which his organisation would launch an “armed operation” against the outfit to secure the hostages’ release.

“They must release the family members and stop harassing our cadres or face the consequences,” the release said.

The battle between the two groups has been under way for two weeks now.
