Karbis to protest NSCN claim

Guwahati, Jan. 24: Peeved over the NSCN (I-M)?s claim over a large area of Karbi Anglong in its proposed Nagalim, the Karbi Students? Association has decided to submit a representation to the Centre opposing any move to divide the hill district.

The association president Roland Kiling told The Telegraph here that the representation would be sent to the Centre after an official resolution is passed at the general conference of the students? organisation to be held at Diphu from January 29.

?Karbi Anglong is for the Karbis and there can be no question of giving even an inch of our land to others,? Kiling said.

He said the ?progress? in talks between the Centre and NSCN (I-M) leaders ?has caused much apprehension? among the Karbis. He said they would seek a clear statement from the Central leaders that no part of the state is touched while finding a solution to the Naga problem.

The association, which will hold its 25th conference, has invited leaders of premier student organisations of the region to seek their support for an autonomous Karbi state.

?Leaders of the All-Assam Students? Union, the All-Bodo Students? Union and Northeast Students? Organisation will attend our five-day conference,? Kiling said. Association sources said it is planning to revive the autonomous state movement as it was ?aghast? at the failure of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council to bring changes in the hill district.
