Kaziranga to get new dimensions

Bokakhat, Dec. 8: Kaziranga National Park will have a great deal more on offer for tourists than just the one-horned rhinoceros from the next season. Bokakhat subdivisional officer D.K. Nath told a group of visiting newsmen that tourists would get a unique flavour of Assam when they visit the national park in the next season.

The official said a new botanical garden, adjacent to the tourist lodges at Kohora, will have a natural waterfall, a variety of trees and flowers having medicinal value, and a children?s park. Work on these has started and is likely to be completely next year. ?The botanical garden will be a perfect location to spend a day with your family,? Nath said.

More than the botanical garden, the official said, a model village would be a special attraction for tourists. The village would have clusters of several houses belonging to different tribes of Assam.

Nath said funds for the project have already arrived and the administration is scouting for a location near the national park to set up the village.

The Bokakhat subdivisional administration has also sent proposals to the tourism department to give a facelift to the ancient Numaligarh rampart near the national park. ?There are many tourists spots in and around the park. There will soon be more to Kaziranga than rhino-watching,? the subdivisional officer said.

The Kaziranga National Park itself is getting a facelift for the three-day Elephant Festival that will begin on December 30. The road leading to the park is being spruced up and permanent gates, one leading to the park and one to the tourist lodges at Kaziranga, are being built.
