IMPHAL, February 6: The 36th General Conference of the Koiren Youth Organisation, Manipur, which is being held with the aim to preserve the Koiren (formerly Koireng) community, was formally inaugurated by the agriculture minister S Rajen at Longa Koireng village under Saitu constituency. The beginning of the five-day event was marked by unfurling of the KYO flag, cultural programme and games and sports. The observation will conclude on February 10 next. The KYO has been organising its general conference every year with the purpose of preserving the Koiren community's identity in the State and meeting the new challenges to the predominantly village economy of Koiren villages. The conference also provide a platform for members of Koiren community pockets spread all over the state to come together and discuss the problem and prospects of the community. While speaking at the inaugural function, Rajen emphasised the inseparable ties between the Koiren community of Saitu and the Meitei community of his constituency (Lamshang) for mutual economic development and interdependencies. Rajen said though Heibirok bridge actually falls under Saitu constituency, he is taking special interest in its construction for the development of the Koiren community in the area. He also disclosed that a sum of Rs 45 lakhs has already been sanctioned in the work programme of PWD for the repair of Sagolband Maklang road.
