GUWAHATI, Dec 7 ? The Karbi Students? Association (KSA) and the Khasi Students? Union (KSU) have decided to put pressure on the governments of Assam and Meghalaya respectively, as well as the concerned autonomous councils, to resolve the boundary problem once for all. The two student bodies want the problem to be resolved on the basis of ?historical evidence and documents.?
The decision to this effect was taken in the meeting between the leaders of the KSA and the KSU held at Shillong yesterday, KSA general secretary Pankaj Teron said today. The central issue during yesterday?s meeting was the quit notice issued by the KSU to the Karbis living in Meghalaya. The two bodies, said Teron, decided to appeal to the underground UPDS and KNV not to harass the innocent villagers in Block I & II of Karbi Anglong.
The KSA urged the Khasi militant outfit, the HNLC, to desist from such actions, which may prove detrimental to the cause of people of both the communities. The KSA requested all sections of the people to cooperate so that peace could return to the troubled Karbi Anglong district. The KSA welcomed back the displaced Khasi-Pnar people to the district while requesting the KSU to withdraw its quit notice against the Karbis.
Teron said that the KSU leadership assured the KSA that they will withdraw the notice in a couple of days and also take all necessary steps so that the Karbi students can return to Shillong to complete their examinations and continue their studies. The student outfits have decided to send a joint team to tour the two affected blocks within this month to bring back a sense of safety and security among the people.
