Manipur varsity VC, Registrar released

IMPHAL, Dec 18 ? The abducted Manipur University Vice Chancellor and Registrar who were held captives since December 13 by the banned underground Kanglei Yaol Kanna Lup, (KYKL) under its ?Operation New Kangleipak?, for ?cleansing? education system were released early on Saturday morning with bullet injuries on their left legs.

They have been admitted to Regional Institute of Medical Science Hospital, Imphal with bullet wounds on the left legs but are out of danger after being successfully operated, hospital sources said.

University Vice Chancellor Dr Ng Bijoy Singh and Registrar Dr R K Ranjan were punished for flouting University Grant Commission?s rules in the appointment of Director, Audio Visual Research Centre, (AVRC) in the Manipur University, a statement of the outfit said.

Before the punishment, the KYKL men produced the duo before mediamen somewhere in Senapati district on Friday night and said that they (VC and Registrar) ignored repeated warnings of the outfit adding that the UGC established 10 AVRC centres and 7 EMRC as media centres in 17 universities across India. For the whole of Northeast, only one AVRC centre was established in Manipur. The ?punishments? have been made to save the highest institution of learning of the State from the hands of the incorrigible duo.

University officials, students, several organizations and political parties which have launched dharnas and reiterated appeals for safe release of the Varsity heads have called off their agitation. The outfit also questioned the promotion of Prof. Rajmani from controller-in-charge to controller and appointment of Dr T Inaobi as assistant director of sports.

Prof. Rajmani was involved in many mark tampering cases earlier and was suspended on a number of occasions while it was not a secret that Dr T Inaobi spent around Rs. 3 to 5 lakh for his recruitment. This is the first major armed action since the MU has been converted into a Central University by the Prime Minister on November 20.

This is the second intervention of the underground outfits in the administration of the MU since its establishment in 1980. Banned UNLF had earlier cautioned two Professors on charge of mark tampering in BEd examinations in February this year.
