IMPHAL, Dec 17 ? The whereabouts of Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University G Bijoy and Registrar R K Ranjan who were reportedly kidnapped by unidentified persons on Monday are not yet known, reports PTI. Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Y Joykumar Singh told PTI that the VC and the Registrar were reportedly kidnappped by unidentified persons from the university campus at Kanchipur in Imphal West district of Manipur on Monday last.
However, no one at the university or the family members of the officials had informed the police till Thursday, the ADGP added. The police, he said, took up a suo-moto case Thursday in this connection based on newspaper reports, Singh said. The police was conducting search operations and had alerted all police stations, he said.
President of the MU teachers' association E Bijoykumar told PTI Thursday that the VC along with the registrar, a doctor and a driver were seen going out of the MU campus in the ambassador car of the Registrar on Monday afternoon. The secretary to the VC received a call from the VC asking him to wait for him (VC) as he was coming on that day (Monday).
This was the last contact with the VC through his mobile telephone. He said the VC and Registrar were not abducted from the university compus adding that their car might be hijacked outside the MU campus. The abductors released the doctor and the driver on Tuesday last safely, he added. Bijoykumar said there was no demand of money from any organisation to the VC office. He said he had no knowledge of the organisation responsible for abduction.
Meanwhile, the MU teachers' association in its meeting held this afternoon decided to stop teaching in the university immediately. The All Manipur Students Union (AMSU), in a release, today appealed to the organisation responsible for abduction of VC and Registrar to release them safely on humanitarian ground and in the best interest of the student community.
