The Youth Front has been observing April 6 as the Manipur Youth's Day in recognition of the patriotic zeal and dauntless courage of Prince Shenggoisana who fought against the British and laid down his life for the sake of motherland in 1891. The main function was marked by offering tarpan for the young martyr at Arong river and paying of floral tributes to his memorial. Besides the martial arts performers also gave thang-ta salute to the departed soul. Speaking at the function, the chief guest, PHED and Law Minister O Joy informed that the Youth's Day has been observed by the Youth Front of MPP since 1995. Initially the solemn occasion was observed in the office of the MPP. However, for the last three years, the venue has been shifted to the Thoubal Athokpam Khongjom War Memorial complex, he said. The Minister said that earlier people used to dread venturing into the memorial of our forefathers who sacrificed their lives and pay tributes to them for fear of being branded as revolutionaries. But it was later at the insistence of the people that the Khongjom War Memorial complex at Thoubal Athokpam and its adjoining areas including Arong river were developed.
