Marngar lake added to tourist map of Meghalaya

SHILLONG, June 14 – Another destination was added to the tourist map of scenic Meghalaya as the state government took steps to promote Marngar Lake in Ri-Bhoi district. The enchanting Marngar Lake, about 60 km from here, surrounded by lush green hills, is a famous spot among the people of Ri-Bhoi district and even tourists from outside. The waterbed was frequented by many especially on holidays and special occasions.

Chief Minister DD Lapang, laying the foundation stone to make the place as a tourist spot yesterday, said that after taking into consideration the tourism potential of the lake, the government sanctioned an initial amount for developing it and its surrounding areas to make it an ‘organised tourist spot’ with proper fencing and other facilities.

Expressing his confidence that Marngar Lake would soon be incorporated in the state’s tourism map, he felt that this would woo more visitors from both across the country and abroad. This would help the economy of the area, generate employment among the people especially the youth, official sources today quoted him as saying.

The Chief Minister also called upon the village leaders to set up a committee to be entrusted with the work of managing the developed lake to derive maximum benefit.
