Aizawl, Feb. 24: The Mizoram People?s Conference (MPC) took another step towards disintegration with one former MLA and three party headquarters secretaries submitting their resignations today.
The troubled regional party of Mizoram has already been facing much difficulty. One sitting MLA F. Lalthanzuala and another ex-MLA H. Laltanpuia left the party in December after it suffered major setbacks in the November 2003 Assembly polls.
However, the trouble for the MPC seems to start only as tomorrow?s party general conference is going to witness a tug of war between the sitting president Lalhmingthanga and ex-MLA Col Lalchungnunga for the post of president.
Talking to the media, L.N. Tluanga, the ex-MLA who left the party today, said, ?The split in the party over the selection of a leader has left us with no choice but to leave it. We can no longer trust the existing leadership.? Three headquarters secretaries, H. Ramdinthara, Lalberhuma and H. Zosangliana, supported Tluanga?s views.
The rebels told the media they had no immediate plans of joining another party. ?However, we can assure you that we are going to be very regional,? Lalberhuma said, implying that they were not joining the Congress, which left only the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and the ZNP options open. He further said they were only the ?front-runners in an exodus that is to follow in leaving the MPC?.
Ramdinthara, who was also the editor of the MPC mouthpiece Hmasawnna, said blocks and village council leaders of the MPC would be leaving the party soon. He alleged that both the factions in the MPC, Lalhmingthanga and Col Lalchungnunga, were trying to tie up with the BJP.
