More schools prefering CBSE course

GUWAHATI, Feb 5 — Several top-notch schools in the State which are now affiliated to the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), are trying to shift their affiliation to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in view of the growing popularity of the CBSE-affiliated public schools in the State of late. Sources in the CBSE regional office here claim that they are getting increasing number of requests from reputed SEBA-affiliated schools for fresh affiliation under the CBSE. The basic reasons for which more and more guardians and students are preferring education under CBSE are that the curriculum committee of the CBSE reviews and upgrades the syllabus almost every year, unlike SEBA results of CBSE final examination are always declared promptly enabling the students to vie for seats in institutions of higher education of their preference in time.

Moreover, the CBSE follows certain rigid norms in giving affiliation to a school so that a certain standard of education is ensured in these institutions. Although a number of top-line schools are seeking affiliation under the CBSE, it will be not possible for them to attain the same unless the State authority provide them with the no objection certificate. The CBSE regional officer, KK Chowdhury informed that unless the Government of Assam gave the no objection certificate that it had no objection to affiliating any particular school with the CBSE, the latter would not consider the application for affiliation. The CBSE norm in this regard is very particular in view of the fact that education is a State subject as per the provision of the Constitution of the country. The regional officer informed that to get affiliation under the CBSE, the educational institutions must fulfil certain laid down norms as per the affiliation by-laws of the CBSE.

Some of such rigid norms are: the school should be non-proprietary in nature and it should be run by a registered society; a high school building should be located on a plot of two acres (5.5 bighas) of land with at least one square metre built-up area per child and adequate open space for the purpose of playground; duely tested and certified fire-fighting equipment should be fitted in school premises; the school accounts should be audited annually by chartered accountants; the school should have a well-equipped library with at least five books per children; the school should obtain a hygiene and sanitation certificate from the State health authority regarding drinking water facilities, toilets and the surroundings.

Regarding qualification of the head of the institutions and other teachers of schools seeking CBSE affiliation, Sri Chowdhury informed that as per the norms in case of a secondary school, the head of institution should be graduate with BEd and at least seven years of teaching experience. In case of a senior secondary school, the head of institution should be a post-graduate with BEd with about seven years of teaching experience. Although teachers of a CBSE-affiliated school should have a BEd degree, in case of the NE the Board allows two years time for teachers of newly affiliated schools to acquire BEd degree considering that there are hardly sufficient number of BEd degree holders in the region.

The CBSE which has spread its tentacles to 25 countries and given affiliation to about 75 schools abroad, has so far given affiliation to 11 schools in Guwahati barring the Central schools. Those are: Faculty School, Guwahati Public School, National School, Srimanta Shankardev Academy, Maharishi Vidyapeeth, Maria’s Public School, State Bank Officers’ Institution (SBOI), Miles Bronson School, Gurukul Grammar School, Hindustani Kendriya Vidyalaya, Army School, Narengi.
