MSCP, BJP are leaders in panchayat polls

IMPHAL, January 10: Counting of votes for the elections held to 7 municipal councils and 18 nagar panchayats was completed peacefully today. Judging from the results available so far, the ruling MSCP and the BJP were the strongest performers, with the MSCP grabbing Mayang Imphal municipal councils and at least four nagar panchayats outright, while the BJP has captured the Bishnupur municipal council, along with at least three nagar panchayats. The Congress also performed well in some areas. In Mayang Imphal municipal council, seven MSCP candidates, two INC, one SP and two Independent candidates were declared elected. In Kakching municipal -council, five INC, four MSCP, two Independent, and one CPI candidates, were declared elected. Eight MSCP candidates were successful in Tboubal municipal council, along with five Independents, three INC and two BJP candidates. Eight Independent candidates were declared elected in Nambol municipal council, along with four MSCP, one CPI, one INC and one MPP candidate. In Bishnupur municipal council, nine BJP, two Independent and one INC candidate were declared elected. Moirang municipal council saw three BJP, two NCP, three FPM, three Independent and one INC candidate being declared elected. Results of the elections to the Jiribam municipal council could not be obtained immediately. Of the two nagar panchayats that went to the polls in Imphal east district, in Andro nagar panchayat, seven candidates of the MSCP, one BJP candidate and four independent candidates were declared elected. In Lamlai nagar panchayat, five CPI candidates, three BJP and one independent were elected. Six nagar panchayats went to the polls in Imphal west district. Among them, in Lamsang n/p, seven BJP candidates, of whom six won unopposed, two MSCP candidates and one independent candidate were declared elected. For Lilong n/p, six MSCP, two MPP, and one independent candidate were declared elected. In Wangoi n/p, four MSCP and three independent were elected, while five MSCP and four independent candidates won in Samurou. In Lilong n/p (under Thoubal districtjurisdiction), five INC and three MSCP candidates were declared elected. Two MPP, MSCP and two independent candidates were declared elected to the Kakching Khunou n/p. Seven BJP, one MSCP and one independent candidate were successful in polls to Sugnu n/p. Five BJP, two MSCP and two independent candidates were declered elected to the Thongkhong Luxmi bazar n/p. Election results for Wanging, Heirok, Sekmi, Sikhong Sekmai, Yairipok, Kumbi and Kwakta n/ps were not immediately available.
