Naga MLAs will have to abide by pact, says UNC

Imphal, February 08: The United Naga Council, UNC, has announced that it neither supports nor opposes any particular political party in the forthcoming Manipur Assembly elections, but insisted that the elected Naga MLAs must firmly abide by the declaration signed yesterday at Senapati. A statement issued jointly by the UNC Working Group also expressed deep appreciation to the candiates of the different political parties for their cooperation and commitment to work in the interest of the Naga people. It stated that yesterday's meeting of Naga candidates was convened in view of the common resolve of the Naga people to strengthen the ongoing peace process for an honorable political solution, and the need hi uphold the rights of the Naga people. The candidates, among other things, pledged to use the election campaign to strengthen the ongoing peace process including the application of the ceasefire to the whole of ?Naga-Land? (Nagalim) within the present day situation, to promote the inherent rights of the Nagas in the Assembly and also to resign from the Assembly to promote the peace process, if required to do so.
