SHILLONG, Nov 19 ? The Centre has found the progress of 21 housing projects for urban poor in the north eastern region being executed by the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) ?as per schedule? but expressed dismay over maintenance of assets created by the agency by respective state governments.
A review meeting by Secretary, Union Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation, Chitra Chopra with NBCC chairman-cum-managing director Arup Roy Choudhury discussed yesterday the implementation of the projects, official sources said.
The meeting took note that of the 21 projects in the last two financial years, six were completed and handed over to respective governments while the rest were in ?advanced stage? of completion, the sources said. The meeting, attended by senior officials of the north-eastern states including Sikkim, also took note of 12 more projects, valued at Rs 83 crore, sanctioned during the current fiscal.
Chopra, while speaking to reporters after the meeting, however expressed dismay over the maintenance of assets created by the NBCC by the respective state governments. The secretary said despite difficult terrain, communication and infrastructure bottlenecks in procuring construction materials and insurgency problems in some areas, the progress of NBCC work in the region was satisfactory.
Chopra, accompanied by senior officials of the ministry, also inspected the housing projects implemented by NBCC in Shillong worth Rs 5 crore. She also visited the parking and shopping complex at two places in the city valued at over Rs 19.48 crore.
