Guwahati, April 16: The banned National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) today alleged that the recent abduction of three activists of the Dima Halam Daoga (DHD) and the subsequent killing of 28 Dimasas were the handiwork of “Indian intelligence agencies”.
The NDFB, however, refrained from naming any outfit and urged the “kidnappers” to release the DHD militants without any condition. The DHD has blamed the militant Hmar People’s Council (Democratic) for the two incidents. “The NDFB is seriously concerned over the incident and urges the kidnappers to free the DHD members immediately without any condition. The NDFB also appeals to all to refrain from any activity that might disturb the harmony among the various indigenous groups living in the area,” NDFB publicity chief Erakdao said in a statement.
He said, “The struggles of the indigenous peoples of the Northeast to break free from the Indian Union are not only being suppressed by the Indian military force but also being targeted by the Indian intelligence agencies.”
The strife-torn Cachar and North Cachar Hills districts are limping back to normal with no fresh violence being reported from any part of the districts. Curfew was relaxed for 12 hours from 6 am in North Cachar Hills district today.
Cachar additional deputy-commissioner Jayanta Chowdhury told The Telegraph that confidence-building measures launched by the army and the civil administration among the inmates of relief camps were on in full swing.
He, however, said there was still shortage of securitymen in the district. The district authorities have already requisitioned the government for more personnel to deal with the situation effectively and to prevent a fresh breakout of ethnic clashes in the district.
Chowdhury said district administration officials were in touch with their Manipuri counterparts to arrange for the return of Bengali Hindu inmates of the camp in Lakhipur Girls’ High School. They had fled their homes in Manipur in the aftermath of militant attacks.
