SHILLONG, March 12 ? The police chiefs of the north-eastern States have called for intelligence-sharing between the States, on a daily basis, in order to effectively counter insurgency in the region. The 10th conference of the DGP?s of the region, held at Gangtok last week, held that intelligence must be shared on a daily basis instead of monthly or quarterly basis. Accordingly, an effective and regular mechanism needs to be put in place, the conference recommended. Official sources here said that the two-day conference also suggested setting up of an ordnance depot at Guwahati for ensuring a speedy and steady supply of weapons and ammunition to the police and security forces. ?This will help to deal with the insurgents more swiftly and firmly,? the sources said. Calling for strengthening of security on the international borders, the police chiefs pleaded for expediting the setting up of ?Border area management committee? at the State-level as recommended by the Group of Ministers (GOM) on Kargil. The DGPs also asked for the Central funds meant for modernisation of police force in the north eastern States to be directly given to the police. They suggested implementation of ?one border, one police? norm proposed by the Union Government so as to streamline border security. The conference was attended by the DGPs, IGPS and other senior officials of State police in the region, Central paramilitary forces, intelligence agencies and army, the sources disclosed.
