NE, Myanmar rocked

NEW DELHI, March 4: An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale jolted Northeastern India including Assam and neighbouring Myanmar early today causing panic among the people though there were no reports of any casualty or damage to property. The quake occurred at 4.26 am and had its epicentre on Indo-Myanmar border, Meteorological Department said here. A moderate quake, lasting a few seconds, was experienced in Mizoram, H Lallenmawia, superintending geologist of the Geology and Mining Department, said in Aizawl. An earthquake, the second in the past six days, shook Meghalaya capital Shillong and its surrounding areas. On February 27, a quake measuring 4.7 was experienced in Shillong. The epicentre of the quake was 23.8 degree North (Latitude) and 93.7 degree East (Longitude). There was no report of casualty or damage to property. A mild quake shook southeastern Bangladesh today but caused no damage or loss of life, meteorologists said in Chittagong. "The mild quake shook the Chittagong region for some 35 seconds around 0450 local time," said an official at the country's lone geophysical observatory in Chittagong port city. He said the epicentre of the quake was 336 km away from Chittagong, but the observatory failed to measure its strength on the Richter scale. "The observatory is ill-equipped to read a quake's strength or exactly locate its epicentre," said the official. Gujarat jolted: An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale shook parts of Gujarat this afternoon, sending people scurrying out into the streets, officials said in Ahmedabad. There were no immediate reports of damage, they said. The tremor was felt at 2 pm. There was panic in the Vastrapur and satellite areas of the city that had been among the worst-hit in the January 26 tremor.
