Neepco threat looms over Tripura

Agartala, May 8: The Neepco has threatened to suspend power supply unless the Tripura government clears its dues immediately. The threat issued by the North Eastern Electrical Power Corporation (Neepco) by a formal letter yesterday sent officials of the power department into a tizzy because the state is facing a severe funds constraint.

Sources in the power department said the Neepco has demanded immediate payment of Rs 34.23 crore as dues.

They, however, stressed that much of this amount has already been paid and that efforts were on to convince the Neepco authorities about the actual position.

“The amount is composed of the principal as well as the interest. We are making payments by instalment and even much of what they have claimed has already been paid. We are explaining this to the Neepco authorities,” a source stressed.

As a power-deficit state, Tripura generates 70 MW from its own sources, imports 60 MW on an average daily from Neepco and the 30 MW daily shortfall is made up by loadshedding.

Sources said Tripura’s daily import requirement of power is 86 MW, but Neepco can never supply more than 60 MW.

Manipur appeal: A social organisation today appealed to the people to help the 600 displaced villagers who had fled to Sajik Tampak border village in Chandel district following clashes between the army and Manipur rebels, reports PTI from Imphal.

Publicity secretary of the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation, Tompok Likmabam, said in a release that the people should help the villagers both physically and financially.

A detailed report about the displaced villagers is still awaited, officials sources in Imphal said.
