Negi murder case: All accused acquitted

GUWAHATI, February 28: The Designated Court, Guwahati today acquitted all the three persons chargesheeted in the case relating to murder of the then Superintendent of Police of Dibrugarh district Daulat Singh Negi. Negi, an Indian Police Service officer, was killed in an ambush by suspected United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants near Panitola in Dibrugarh district on July 29, 1990. The case was later handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the central investigating agency filed the chargesheet of the case in 1991. The central investigating agency chargesheeted six ULFA men - Hridayananda Konwar alias Saurav Gogoi, Madhurya Gohain alias Mridul, Bijoy Das, Shamal Baruah alias Dadu, Ritu Gogoi and Jewel Gogoi, in connection with the case. As per the CBI chargesheet, Jewel was also injured in the shoot-out and he was shifted to Madras for treatment. He was later arrested in Madras and his confessional statement was filed in the court. Apart from Jewel, the other five were shown absconders in the CBI chargesheet. In the meantime, Ritu Gogoi and Madhurjya Gohain died in encounters with security forces while Bijoy Das could not be traced out. The other three - Saurav Gogoi, Jewel Gogoi and Shyamal Baruah - surrendered and faced the trial. During the course of the trial, as many as 30 witnesses were examined by the court. However, Justice J Bora of the Designated Court today acquitted all the three accused. During the trial, the CBI represented in the court by advocate D K Das. He was assisted by N Upadhyaya, G. Singh and B Dey.
