No single party will get absolute majority: MPP

IMPHAL, Jan 6 — The president of the Manipur People’s Party O Joy has predicted that no single political party will get absolute majority in the forthcoming 8th State Assembly election in Manipur. Speaking to the newsmen, the former Opposition firebrand O Joy stated that the State is headed for a coalition government after the Assembly election which is slated to be held in two phases on February 14 and 21 next. He said “his party does not particularly welcome the election. However, as a regional political party, his party is committed to the principles of democracy.’’ He further said that MPP will fully participate in the poll process, adding that MPP will not go along with any political party that are against preserving the territorial integrity of Manipur. The former Law Minister also expressed that his party will keep at arms length all political figures who are tainted by corruption charges. He said that during the last few years, democratic forces have been hijacked by undemocratic organisations. The constant party-hopping indulged in by some political figures against all democratic norms have galvanised public opinion against the State political figures, he said.

Meanwhile, the Congress party is reportedly all set to declare the number of candidates for the ensuing election. On the other hand, another regional political party Federal Party of Manipur had already announced to give their list of candidates for the coming election in the evening of January 11.
