GUWAHATI, April 20 ?Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi?s latest appeal for negotiation during the festive season of Bihu has nothing new in it, said the proscribed ULFA here today. The ULFA in a faxed press release, said that the Chief Minister?s appeal was only a cover-up measure to hide the State Government?s conspiratorial attitude and lack of effectiveness in matters of resolving the ULFA issue through negotiation. Infact, the Chief Minister?s appeal is nothing but an attempt at befooling the people, it is full of hypocracy and product of a diabolic design, the banned outfit said.
It also called for clear-cut statements from both the State and Central Governments on the three conditions given by the ULFA for initiating the process of negotiation and warned more conflicting situation in the near future in case of the failure of the State and Central Governments in evolving a positive attitude towards resolving the ?conflict between Assam and India?. Meanwhile, suspected ULFA militants abducted a doctor Abdul Qader and his wife from Goalpara today, said a PTI report, quoting police sources here today.
Our Nalbari Correspondent reports quoting the Superintendent of Police, Nalbari, that the ULFA had been serving extortion notices on officials like the Inspector of Schools, Nalbari and even on the fourth grade employees like peons and chowkidars in a large scale. The Inspector of Schools, Nalbari, Sri Narayan Chandra Pegu, who received an extortion notice of Rs 10 lakh, has been absent from his duty for the past three months and he has been reportedly functioning from his Guwahati residence. This is despite the assurance of adequate security cover to him, the SP said, regretting that a serious lack of work culture was responsible for the Inspector of Schools not attending his office.
However, the extortion drive of the banned outfit is on the wane, following the gearing up of security measures against the outfit in the district in the past two months. As many as 25 hardcore militants of the outfit were killed by the security forces during this period in the district and the funerals of these slain militants were also not largely attended, the SP said.
Our Tinsukia and Doomdooma Correspondents report that seven hardcore ULFA militants today surrendered before the authorities at the Laipuli Army camp, Tinsukia. The militants, who surrendered were? Sunil Phukan, alias Anup Phukan of Namphet Village, Jagun, Babul Gogoi of Nabajyoti Gaon, Hemanta Gogoi, alias Bobby of Parbatpur, Tapan Bargohain of Dhola, David Moran, alias Bikash Moran of Sukani Village, Pranab Dutta, alias Binanda Kalita of Lajum and Binanda Moran, alias Dhananjoy Phukan.
