Notice over misuse of ration cards by migrants

NEW DELHI, Nov 10 ? The Delhi High Court today sought explanation from the Centre and Delhi Government on alleged misuse of ration card and 'Below Poverty Line' card as residential proof for securing the passport by illegal Bangladeshi migrants, reports PTI.

Issuing notices to concerned ministries and departments, a Bench comprising Chief Justice B C Patel and Justice B D Ahmed posted the matter for further hearing on November 17 along with a pending Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on the illegal Bangladeshi migrants filed by advocate Chetan Dutt.

In the application, Dutt claimed that ration cards and BPL cards were easily accessible to illegal Bangladeshi migrants and there would be no difficulty for them to obtain the passport if the two are considered as residential proof. He contended that ration cards and BPL cards are issued only for the purpose of obtaining subsidised foods.

The petitioner has sought court's direction that ration card and BPL card should not be considered as residential proof for issuing passport or any other government documents.

In the main writ petition, the petitioner has sought framing of a policy, whereby, action could be taken against the illegal Bangladeshi migrants. It has been contended by them that illegal migrants were a burden on the civic amenities and efforts should be made to deport them.
