Panidihing bird sanctuary inundated

SIVASAGAR, July 20 ? Continuous rainfall in Upper Assam and adjoining hilly area of Arunachal Pradesh since the last couple of days has posed serious threat to the embankments of Brahmaputra and all its tributaries in the regions and overflowing Brahmaputra has inundated vast areas at Dehingmukh, Desungmukh and Dekhowmukh areas. River Brahmaputra was flowing 2 metre above danger level on Monday morning may at any moment breach embankment at Chilotia, Milankur, and Libeel as water is continuously flowing over the dykes.

Meanwhile, back flow through tributary Demow inundated the Panidihing Bird Sanctuary and Saragna areas on Monday. Mitang and Daika rivers have submerged about 20 villages in Kowarpur, Jakaichuk maujas. Flood water have damaged the iron bridge connecting the famous Islamic pilgrimage site at Charaguri Chapori to the mainland. Transport Minister Anjan Dutta on July 15 and 16 visited various flood-affected areas in Jokaichuk, Kowarpur and Panidihing maujas and supervised the relief and rehabilitation work. The Minister told The Assam Tribune that the government is taking all possible steps to keep up relief works with adequate supplies so far. Around 45,000 people have been affected in the flood in Sivasagar district. A team from Assam Medical College of Dibrugarh also provided free medical treatment to the flood-affected people.
